Blue Jay Bulletin

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TIFFANY PHELPS

Image

Gone are the days of passively sitting and listening to a teacher lecture. (Thank goodness!) Instead, our students are immersed in experiential learning opportunities and true enrichment experiences. This week, I thought I'd take your through some of the highlights of what our little Blue Jays were up to. There is no doubt fun was had by all!

Kindergarten participated in "Pumpkin Exploration".  Each student brought in a small pumpkin, and they made some estimates and explored.  They counted the number of lines, measured the distance around the pumpkin in yarn, measured the height in pop cubes, observed & recorded with their senses, discovered if it would sink or float in water, counted seeds, and finally painted their pumpkins!

1st Grade went to the Austin Nature and Science Center for a "6 Leg, 8 Leg" field trip. They learned about the stages of metamorphosis and what different insects look like at each stage. They observed and compared arthropods, arachnids and crustaceans. They also got to use sweep nets to collect spiders.

2nd Grade created a board game for each math topic they learned; time, addition, place value, comparing and ordering numbers. They had a blast using their knowledge to challenge their classmates! The board games turned out AWESOME! The students had to problem solve and work together to create the board games and then actually playing them to review the concepts.

This week 3rd grade did a couple of activities with candy corn. They did a science experiment where they investigated which solution would make the candy corn dissolve the fastest. They tested it with water, rubbing alcohol, and vinegar. They also did a candy corn STEAM challenge where groups had to build the tallest tower using only toothpicks and a cup of candy corn.

4th Grade studied Texas Explorers.  Each group had to research a different explorer, make a life-size example, and create a Keynote to present the information to the class.  All of the group members are assigned different roles within the group and have to work together to complete their jobs.

5th grade just concluded a three-day Live Oak outdoor adventure. While enjoying nature, students integrated science, history, mathematics, reading, writing and physical activities into their days. Our fifth grade students return to BCE as a more cohesive group through this shared experience.

GT took a field trip to The University of Texas to test the bridges they created. One of the bridges held over 325 pounds, beating last year's winner of 257 pounds. They also created movies about the buildings they studied on their tour of architecture around Austin.

In the Library students participated in the "Unusual Reading" contest.  All students had their pictures made into bookmarks. Participants received their special bookmarks this week and other BCE students will get copies of the bookmarks starting next week. Also, a festive atmosphere was created in the library when students brought carved and painted pumpkins to display.
