MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL PHELPS

The kick-off to our "12 Day Holiday Countdown" was a huge success.  We surprised the faculty and students with a morning assembly.  Laughs were shared by all.  You can view the fun here: 12 Days Before the Break Skit

Strep Throat

  • Strep throat is the most common bacterial infection in schools.
  • Although strep infections occur year-round, there is a predictable surge the second week of school and during the winter months.
  • Strep is readily transmissible to siblings and parents—more than 40% of secondary cases are family members.
  • Most children who catch strep develop some symptoms within 1-5 days of exposure.

Symptoms

  • Strep throat comes on suddenly (like the flu), not gradually (like a cold).  You can literally feel fine one minute and sick the next.
  • Symptoms of strep can include fever, chills, malaise, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, a sandpapery rash and a red, sore throat with visible pus.
  • Strep may present atypically—frequently without fever and sometimes even without a red or sore throat.
  • Strep throat causes up to 10% of all acute abdominal pain.
  • Strep throat and the flu can infect a child simultaneously.

See a doctor for any of the following signs/symptoms

  • If your child tells you that it hurts to swallow saliva (even if there is no fever)
  • If you see little reddish-purple dots (petechiae) on the soft palate
  • If your child has reddened, sunburned-looking skin on the chest, cheeks, abdomen, groin or inner thighs ("scarlet fever" rash).  On closer inspection, the redness is speckled with tiny pink dots and feels sandpapery to the touch.  The face is flushed with paleness around the mouth (circumoral pallor).  The rash typically follows the sore throat and fever by 24 hours but may be the first symptom.
  • It's best to err on the side of caution.  Untreated strep can cause serious heart and kidney damage in a small percentage of patients.

Teachers disinfect their classrooms every day, but they need your help.   If your child has symptoms compatible with strep throat, he/she should avoid school until the results of a throat culture are known.

Our annual BCE Joy Drive has gotten off to a fine start! Starting Monday, November 27th,  fifth grade students began collecting toys from all grade levels for children in the Blue Santa program.  We will continue collecting (new) toys and books until December 21st so there is still plenty of time for your child to contribute.   We will have an assembly on December 21st at 2:15 p.m. to celebrate this very special giving opportunity.

The BCE community has never failed to demonstrate compassionate generosity towards our Blue Santa participant children, making this effort an incredibly meaningful experience for our fifth graders and the entire student body.  We are grateful for your kindness this year as well.  The fifth graders are busy concocting several fun prizes to win in return for enthusiastic giving, including a class dance party, extra recess and more still to be determined.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Katie Poole at kpoole@eanesisd.net.  Many thanks for your continued support for this annual giving and 5th grade leadership experience.

Sincerely,

 2017 Fifth Grade Class
