Blue Jay Bulletin

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL PHELPS

BCE Families,

It's hard to believe that we're almost to the end of January and this is our first FULL week of school.  Heads-up though...we have an early release on January 30th.  Students will be released at 12:50 and lunch will be served.

There are a few features of the BCE Bulletin that I'd like to take a moment to point out.

  • Counselor Corner- Be sure to check out these occasional posts for information related to our latest SEL focus.
  • Staff Spotlight- Thanks to Mrs. Pampe and our 4th Grade Social Media Team, we will now highlight a BCE staff member each week.  The Social Media Team will select a staff member of their choosing, create their own interview questions to ask, type the responses, and include a photograph.  We hope you enjoy this student-driven spotlight.
  • Suggestion Box-  If you have an idea for the BCE Bulletin, simply click on the box below.  We would love to hear ideas from you so we can increase the readership of this newsletter.
  • Shout Outs- Please keep them coming!  I take your exact words and enter them into a fun template. It's such a fun surprise for the teachers to find when they check their mail boxes.

Mark your calendars for FAMILY MATH NIGHT on February 5th from 6:30-8:00 pm in the BCE Cafeteria. More information can be found in the flyer below.

Finally, as Nurse Sansom wrote about last week (Note from the Nurse), the flu season is definitely upon us and our custodial crew is working diligently to disinfect and clean our school.  They are using a school approved, hospital grade disinfectant on all common surface areas.  Our restrooms and hand washing areas are kept stocked with soap and paper towels and our trash is removed daily.  In addition to these measures, our BCE Booster Club has generously provided each classroom with Clorox wipes.

Thank you,

Tiffany Phelps

Congratulations to the BCE Spelling Bee Champions:

Grace (4th Grade) and Aman (5th Grade)!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

The District's SEL Focus for the third 9 weeks is Social Awareness and Empathy. At BCE we are reinforcing the development of social awareness and empathy through our Skills of the Week: Showing Concern for Another, Sharing, Offering Help and Giving/ Accepting Compliments)classroom lessons. Additionally, your counselors are visiting classrooms to do lessons on empathy and building emotion identification.  Students are learning to take the perspective of others by deciding how the person might be feeling and to show care and concern.

One of our greatest tools for teaching empathy as educators and parents is to model empathy ourselves. Other tips for teaching empathy at home are included below. For more in depth information, take a look at these articles from Harvard and Parenting Science.

  • Use literature, tv, movies and role play as an opportunity to practice empathizing and discuss how one might feel in a given situation.
  • Improve & practice face reading skills and have student practice making faces, too.
  • Help kids to see what they have in common with others.
  • Help your child to develop self-regulation and emotion management skills.
