March 8, 2018 Barton Creek Elementary Blue Jay Bulletin MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL PHELPS With Spring Break upon us, I will forego the business talk and simply use this moment to wish you and your family a fantastic spring break. I hope you and your loved ones are able to unwind and unplug. We look forward to seeing the smiling faces of our students on March 19th.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER We have had such a fun Kindness Month around Barton Creek Elementary with our Spirit Week, No Negative Talk Week, Mix It Up Lunch Week, and this week especially, has been extra bright with our Cups of Kindness Week! The students have been filling up their classmates' individual "Cups of Kindness" (which have been generously donated to all BCE students from our favorite Chick-Fil-A family, The Zavodnys) with colorful notes filled with sweet words of affirmation. Our No Place for Hate Ambassador Team worked hard to organize our events this year and their efforts have definitely paid off! We will be submitting our application documenting our school wide activities next month to Anti-Defamation League in hopes to be recognized as a No Place for Hate Campus by the end of the year.
Dear BCE Families,
I will be joining Vida Clinic, a school based mental health clinic that serves kids, parents and teachers who have experienced trauma. I know the timing isn't ideal, but it feels like a once in a lifetime dream job that will allow me to truly use my degree and licensure to provide a clinical approach to address trauma in schools. It also takes me back to my roots and passion of working alongside populations that are typically economically disadvantaged, thus limiting their access to mental health services. I am excited and terrified about what lies ahead!
My time with Eanes has been meaningful beyond measure and I have learned so much from each of you. I am so thankful to have been a part of this amazing community. I will be carrying so much of what I learned from you all into this new journey. I can only hope to bring the same level of quality and dedication to my new community as I have experienced firsthand everyday at Eanes.
Sincerely, Amy Ashorn Student Support Counselor CELEBRATIONS! This past weekend one team represented Barton Creek at the Regional Destination
This year 9 teams represented Barton Creek Elementary in FIRST, an engineering program that involves robots, and so much more! Five of the teams competed in the First Lego League Program or FLL. The "engineers" had to design, build, and test a robot to complete challenges related to this year's theme: Hydro Dynamics – how we find, transport, use and dispose of water. In addition, they researched and created presentations. At the competition, the teams also needed to demonstrate core values and were judged separately for that component. Barton Creek also had 3 teams who participated in FLL Jr. These "young engineers" also studied water in our daily lives. This past weekend 4 robotics' teams from Barton Creek represented Barton Creek Elementary with pride as they competed at the Central Texas First Lego League Championship Competition. They were invited to compete against about 60 teams who qualified to go to this level of competition from the central Texas area. We are so proud of our Blue Jays!
