BCE Families,

As we close out the first full week of school, it's starting to feel like we're all settling in.  The positive feedback and support we have received from you really helped us transition fluidly into our school routines.  Admittedly, this has not been a seamless process. We appreciate your patience as we work through the arrival and dismissal of 485 students.  Transportation is working diligently on adjusting times to ensure timeliness to and from school. We are fine-tuning our morning drop-off procedures with safety and organization in mind.  We're almost there! However, we could use your help with a couple of things:

  • Please make sure you are using the SMART Tag Campus Dismissal Manager and submit any changes by 2pm.  Our teachers have been instructed to dismiss students solely through this system.
  • Please remain in your vehicles when in the drop-off and pick-up car lines.  We have to keep this line flowing. I know the car seats are a pain to move, but it could help to move them to the driver's side of the car.

On a completely different note, you may have noticed the painted rocks out front, our staff "tribe" shirts, and #BCEtribe on all our social media posts.  I thought I'd take a moment to explain the story behind these. August 13th was the first day of work for the entire BCE staff. This day is special because of how rare it is for all of us to be together in the same room.  We genuinely value this time and use it to build a sense of community, motivate, and lay out the vision for the new school year. This year we focused on the word TRIBE. However, we didn't use the traditional meaning of the word.  Instead, we discussed "The Reason I Became an Educator".  We all have our different reasons and paths that led us to a career in education.  It's fun to reflect back on our unique stories. Most importantly, it's enlightening to dig into WHY we became educators.  We watched this clip: Michael Jr. Know Your Why I found this to be so powerful.  "When you know your WHY, your WHAT has more impact because you're walking in or towards your PURPOSE".  Such a great message. I won't bore you with the rest of the details, but I summed this up through a visual using Stephen Covey's "Big Rocks" concept.  I demonstrated how you have to put your "WHY rock" before your "WHAT rocks" or we will limit ourselves and our students. Each staff member was then asked to paint their own personal "WHY rock" and set them in the front of the school to serve as a simple reminder when they enter the building every morning.  Finally, they completed a dialogue bubble and Ashley Pampe (Educational Technologist) used them to create this short video:  #BCEtribe Video

I hope this gives you a little insight into what our focus is as we navigate through this year.  We are motivated, driven and inspired to make this a memorable school year, filled with purpose and passion.  Your students are our WHY and truly at the center of our T.R.I.B.E.

Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy your time off on Monday.

All my best,

Tiffany Phelps

BCE Recognized as a No Place for Hate Campus

I am so excited to announce that Barton Creek Elementary has been named a No Place for Hate Campus for the 2017-18 school year by the Anti Defamation League. Our 5th grade ambassadors & sponsors worked hard to create and complete the school wide campus activities and build a community of kindness & we are proudly displaying our No Place for Hate Banner on our campus. We want to continue to be known as a campus that promotes kindness, does not allow for any meanness towards others, and one where students and staff feel cared for by everyone. Applications for this year's 5th Grade Ambassadors will be coming soon to any 5th graders interested in joining the No Place for Hate BCE Team. Get ready for some amazing opportunities to have our BCE students shine! ~Mrs. Wager
