2nd Graders Building Community Models

2nd grade was hard at work last week creating 3-D models of urban, suburban, and rural communities! They've been studying the differences between the types of buildings/structures, roads, numbers of people, numbers of homes, amount of traffic, types of vehicles, etc.

Kids rummaged through their recycling bins and brought all sorts of "trash" that was soon turned to treasure. They were then put in groups of 3-4 and assigned a type of community. They used their imagination to turn cardboard, plastic, & paper into an amazing array of people, places, and things, including:

  • a Cool-Whip swimming pool, complete with slide & diving board
  • a cardboard school bus with small lids for wheels
  • people made with marker lid bodies & bottle cap faces
  • a skyscraper created from a mountain of cans and containers
  • a cereal box barn with cardboard farm animals
  • a restaurant made from a Whataburger french fries container sticking out of a Kleenex box
  • crumpled paper crops
  • a traffic light made with different-colored lids
  • girls with lid faces and TP roll bodies wearing skirts fashioned from "Nothing Bundt Cake" wrappers
  • a farmyard fence made from a netted produce bag
  • a skate park created out of a mochi container

The list could go on forever, but...you get the idea. And even more impressive than the kids' CREATIVITY was their ability to successfully COLLABORATE! As teachers, we stepped back and watched with admiration as the kids skillfully brainstormed and negotiated tough decisions on what needed to be built, who would build which items, where everything would be placed on the project board, and who would say what when it came time for their oral presentation. Kudos to the 2nd graders for a job well-done! If you'd like to see these amazing community creations, come on down to the BCE Library where Ms. Ricter has kindly put them on display.
