5TH GRADE - LIVE OAK

They say when it rains, it pours. Good thing we did not let it get us down at Live Oak this year! Earlier this week, fifth grade made its annual spend-the-night field trip to Live Oak. Trips like these are so important for kids this age. They take on increased responsibility for being where they're supposed to be on time, taking care of themselves, and rising to challenges beyond the school day. They also learn and practice managing homesickness. It gives them an opportunity to experience an education that goes beyond the classroom.

I admit, going into this my second year at BCE, with some trepidation after looking at the weather report.
"How will they even do any of the numerous outdoor activities in this driving rain?" I asked Mrs. Stryker.
"We'll see! They said there's a rain plan," she replied.  It was not the most reassuring answer.

What happened at Live Oak was truly amazing. The teen teachers from Westlake High School and the staff of Live Oak had a full rain contingency plan. They did every outdoor challenge indoors. With some slight modifications, all the Live Oak classic challenges moved indoors: Nitro Crossing, Porthole, Bomb Diffuser, Whale Watching, and Pioneer Living. We were even able to learn about fishing indoors! An amazing thing happened: this year's kids were just as engaged indoors as last years were outdoors. It's so fun watching the kids engage in these games. Strengths and skills that may not always be apparent in the classroom come alive at Live Oak. The fun at Live Oak truly is contagious.

Speaking of contagious fun...The teen teachers brought the summer camp and scouting classics to Live Oak. Maybe you've heard a few lines of Princess Pat, The Funky Chicken, Tarzan and the Frying Pan, and The Beaver Crawl since your kid has returned. These are songs I will never, ever forget.

Before I left for Live Oak, I sent my family the following text message: "It's supposed to rain and be in the 40's with wind gusts up to 25 mph. Let the good time roll!" My dad responded: "Teach them to overcome obstacles and be resilient." The kids overcome obstacles and were resilient in spades at Live Oak. Here's the thing: they were so excited that I didn't have to teach them!
