My children were students at Barton Creek Elementary many years ago when it was a brand new school. I was so inspired by their school nurse, Bonnie Buchholtz, that I dreamed of working here after she retired. To prepare myself, I worked for 10 years as an office nurse for some of Austin's finest pediatricians (Drs. Mike Bayer, Jack Louis, Leighton Ellis, Erica Sharp, and Rebecca Sperling) and five years as the school nurse for Eanes Elementary. In 2016 I finally realized my dream when I was invited to transfer here to Barton Creek Elementary. It is a privilege to be your school nurse. I will do my best to keep your children safe, healthy and feeling loved.
I was born in Michigan, grew up primarily in Abilene and moved to Austin in 1974 as a freshman at UT. I met my future husband in government class. Hook'em! I graduated from UT with highest honors in 1978 and married Don Sansom in 1980. Our children, Sarah and Collin, graduated from WHS in 2004 and 2006. Sarah, known here as "Miss Sansom," is BCE's permanent sub. Collin and his wife, Katie, live in Ft. Worth. They blessed us with our first grandchild, "Beckett," in July 2017. I am completely smitten! My parents live in Lakeway. They garden, golf, play bridge and host family gatherings. In my spare time, I love to plant things, knit things, make stained glass mosaics and walk my sweet dog biscuit.
I have a poignant memory of my mother reading Ozma of Oz to me after I was injured riding my bicycle, so I keep children's books in the clinic as a distraction for sick children. As your school nurse, I hope to work with you to keep your children safe and empowered with knowledge for a healthy future.
